This complete skull and mandible of a hyaena was found at East Turkana on the Karari Ridge in area 113. This hyaena has premolars that are adapted to bone cracking although this adaptation is more developed in the modern day spotted hyaena, Crocuta crocuta.

This skull and mandible belonged to a smaller hyaena that is more like the modern day striped hyaena, Hyaena hyaena, in its morphology.  Complete carnivore skulls such as this one are rare in the fossil record, but this skull and mandible was also associated with much of the skeleton too.
