This mandible of OH 7 was discovered in 1971 by Jonathan Leakey, in the eastern side Gorge of Olduvai. He was excavating the remains of a sabre tooth cat when this discovery was made. This fossil also comprises two pieces of the back of the skull which belonged to a large brained individual. Unfortunately there is considerable damage to the underside and distortion to the front of the mandible which has made it more difficult to assign other specimens to this type specimen. To this end there has been considerable debate about what fossils can convincingly be attributed to this species.
