This is a skull of the extant Blue Wildebeeste (Connochaetes taurinus), found in east Africa in open habitats and grassy plains. These large herbivore feed primarily on grasses and are water dependent. The males and females have smooth horns that are hooked forwards or sideways. There are five subspecies of Connochaetes taurinus found in Africa today. The wildebeeste of the Serengeti Mara ecosystem undertake an anual migration through this area following the rains and the resulting new growth of green grass. This genus of unknown ancestry appears in the late Pleistocene.
