This is a fossil tortoise with both the carapace (top) and plastron (bottom) well preserved. These land dwelling turtles were abundant in the past and some of them grew to be very large. The shell of the tortoise is a defense against predators. The largest preserved tortoise from the Turkana Basin is housed in a field museum in Sibiloi National Park and is some 2 mts in length.
