This is a 1.9 million year old hominin that was discovered in 1972 by Bernard Ngeneo. It was reconstructed by Meave Leakey who re-assembled the hundreds of broken fragments as they were brought back from the excavation site. It represents an almost complete skull of a species of early Homo. This cranium is significant because of its large brain size, typical of our own genus. However this species is poorly represented in the fossil collection. Commonly known as "1470", this cranium is distinctive in its very straight profile when viewed from the side. It was named Homo rudolfensis after Lake Rudolf, the previous name for Lake Turkana.
