This protobiface belongs to the oldest Early Acheulean known so far in East Africa and in the world. It is made on a large flat cobble of phonolite (L= 235mm, W=132mm, T= 55mm). The two faces have been flaked successively to give a pointed shape to one extremity of the tool, but large natural surfaces (cortex) remain. Two different techniques have been applied to shape this large bifacial piece : percussion on passive hammer and hand held direct percussion.
