This left lower jaw, was found by Meave Leakey in Area 103, which is a richly fossiliferous site close to Koobi Fora where the field team were based. The very worn teeth, and the evidence of bad gum disease, show that the jaw belonged to a very old individual. It was found at the bottom of a steep cliff and after an extensive sive at the base of the slope and an excavation up the cliff face, only a few pieces of the skull were recovered. Despite the thorough screening, several years later in 1980, additional fragments of the skull were found having eroded out of the sediment. It is clearly worth returning to excavated sites that have been left to natural erosion.
