The specimen KNMER 801, was found by Richard Leakey in 1971 at a site near Ileret on the east side of Lake Turkana. This is a robust mandible with several large teeth. This specimen was discovered below the Okote Tuff placing it at about 1.7 million years. Extensive sieving of the site yielded a number of other specimens including several isolated teeth and dental fragments. The site produced the fragmentary remains of 11 individuals of Paranthropus boisei, which included three mature mandibles and several postcranial elements found later in 1973.
