This lower jaw belonged to a juvenile Homo erectus from the Okote member. It was found by Harrison Mutua in Area 1, close to Ileret. It was recovered from just below the Chari Tuff, a distinctive volcanic ash layer with a known date of 1.5 million years old. The lower jaw has its juvenile canines and first and second molars in place and the crowns of the adult incisors and first permanent molar are just beginning to erupt. It was while they were working on the screen for this specimen that the incident that led to the recovery of KNM-ER 992 occurred. KNM-ER 992 was found after a local tribesman fired a shot over them and they fled for cover under a thorn bush.
